Difference Between Hot Rolled steel & cold Rolled Steel
Some of the differences between hot-rolled and cold-rolled are the processes in their manufacture, surface characteristics, mechanical properties, and applications.
Manufacturing Process:
Hot Rolled Steel (HRS): This is made by heating large slabs or steel billets to temperatures higher than their recomposition temperature (about 1700°F or 926°C), then rolling to a final product. In this process, the shaping of steel takes place at that instance during its hot condition.
Cold Rolled Steel (CRS): This steel is cold-rolled at the first instant. Steel must first be hot-rolled to the desired thickness before being subjected to additional cold reduction mill processing. The process further refines steel thickness and provides a smooth steel surface.
Surface Finish:
Hot Rolled Steel (HRS): Not the best finished since there is direct cooling after hot rolling. Its surface finish cannot be as smooth as cold rolled steel.
Cold Rolled Steel (CRS): A chromed, darker, smoother, and finer polished surface. In the cold rolling, there is better surface processing, most have fewer faults as preparation when compared to the hot rolling process.
Thickness Tolerance:
Hot Rolled Steel (HRS): This may not have the same shiny appearance as that in cold roll, but for some critical applications, the metal could have more dimensional accuracy and thickness tolerance. Due to the high rate of cooling that it goes through, the metal could have various thicknesses.
Cold Rolled Steel (CRS): Better dimension tolerances than hot rolled steel, since cold rolled steel is cold worked. In cases where the dimensions must be held closer than hot-rolled steel permits, this process makes the steel better suited and aids in its workability.
